Referrals to the Counselor’s Office
Students can be referred to the counselor by a teacher, parent, or other staff member. While confidentiality is an integral part of the counseling relationship, children are encouraged to share their concerns with their parents.
Appointments
The counselor’s door is open to all parents and their children. However, it may be wise to schedule an appointment by calling 913-724-3536 or email wcook@usd458.org. The counselor keeps a schedule much like a teacher and may not be able to accommodate drop in appointments.
Google, Assistance Dog
Google is a trained assistance dog from Kansas Specialty Dog Service. They are a non-profit organization that places assistance dogs with the disabled. Googe is placed with Mrs. Cook for therapeutic purposes. Mrs. Cook has been using dogs in her counseling program since 1994 and Google is her third professionally trained dog. Google has many roles at school including unconditional acceptance of every child, modeling, behavior modification, grief counseling, and many more. Google is the most popular staff member and has a very busy schedule! For more information on Google or to donate to KSDS, please access the website www.ksds.org.
Counseling Curriculum
The counseling curriculum is based on the Kansas State Standards for School Counselors. Topics include: anti-bullying, drug education, careers, social skills, and character education.
